- Inspect all food premises throughout Barnsley MBC.

- Investigate complaints about food, e.g. foreign objects found in food.
- Investigate complaints about poor hygiene in food businesses.
- Investigate individual cases of suspected food poisoning and food poisoning outbreaks.
- Give advice to members of the public who are to operate a new food business to ensure compliance with food law prior to an inspection taking place.
- Undertake food sampling from food premises around the Borough for microbiological testing to ensure our food is safe to eat.
- Give support to food businesses regarding Safer Food Better Business - a Food Safety Management System.

FOOD RETAILERS DID YOU KNOW?
From the 1st January 2006 the following raw food waste has to collected in a separate bin: raw sausages, raw burgers, rare cooked meat, salami, raw poultry, raw fish, frozen raw meat, raw eggs. IT CANNOT GO TO LANDFILL SO YOUR COLLECTOR MUST KNOW THIS. The retailers must keep a record of what has been sent, the amount and who collected it.
